How hard is it to change the oil pump on my 90 dodge 318.
Oil pressure has dropped to the first line on gauge.

The only Stephentown on earth.
I don't mind Coming to work,
but that 8hr wait to go home is a bitch.
No matter how little I do,
I always feel I could do less.

I wouldn't start by suspecting the oil pump. First, remember that you only need about 8 PSI at idle to be in the acceptable parameters according to the FSM. 10 PSI per 1000 RPM is the rule of thumb.

Second, have you checked the oil pressure sending unit? They can fail and give faulty readings. A cheap mechanical gauge can verify the accuracy of the electric sender.

Third, if the sending unit is OK and you still are worried about psi, run 5W-30 weight oil and a Wix/Napa Gold/ or Purolator brand oil filter. If that doesn't boost your pressure, try 10W-30.

If you do wind up having to replace the oil pump, it isn't too bad. You have to drop the exhaust line an drop the oil pen and then pull the pan out. I have done this on two vans previously. The first was a 79 with true dual exhaust and a 360. The oil pump was a piece of cake. The other was a 318 (I think) with stock single exhaust and it was a bit more difficult and messy.

Windows- they're what make a van worth owning!

I'll check the sending unit next week. I have a miss some mornings when I start, smooths out after it warms up.
