Hi there, I am new to the Vanning community. I live in Phoenix Arizona, where rain is rare, but today it stormed pretty good and I found out the hard way that my front pop up vent has a terrible leak, it soaked the interior big time, I may have to redo some of my wood work. I hear it may be raining quite a bit in the near future, so Im really needing to figure this out. Anyways Im trying to find a new one online but I'm not having any luck. In fact I'm not even sure if the proper name is a roof vent, the measurements of mine are about 17" X 28" and its a 1979 Ford E150 custom. I took pictures from the inside and outside but am not sure how to attach them, like I said Im new to this. Its my first post. If you have any information please email me at kristofferkjelby@yahoo.com and I can possibly send you the pictures of the current vent I have on it now.

If anyone can help me out or point me in the right direction please let me know.

Thank you kindly,
Kristoff

Welcome to the Zoo.
Do you have a "roof vent" or a "sunroof?" Vents are usually (but not always) square with an opaque plastic top and raised edges. Sunroofs are usually oblong (side to side on the van) and see-through or tinted glass, and fit flush with the top of the van. (There were some sunroofs that had a raised ridge that the glass/frame sealed against, but they were hard to find, even back in the day.)
From what you've described so far it sounds like you have a sunroof. And without pictures (of the type) or where it's leaking (the built-in seal around the glass vs. the seal around the installation).
In any case, I always had good luck when installing a sunroof or vent when I used a piece of half to three-quarter inch plywood about six inches bigger on each side than the hole I cut in the roof. It eliminated roof flex which breaks down the seals. Cut the interior hole in the chunk of plywood so it fits as snug as you can make it.
In addition to firming up the roof, it also give a nice area to attach interior ceiling panels.

Thanks for the reply and information, I tink it may have been a bubble type sun roof that opens on a hinge like the vents, its rectangular, not square. The previous owner must have painted both sides of it because its blue now, but i can tell it used to be clear. It has a big rounnd turn knob that oppens it up like a the vents but no screen. After looking around on the internet i have found similar looking thing called escape hatches but nothing exact. I have pictures of it saved on my computer but I dont have a URL to add them on here.

NorthMan, if you get a FREE Photobucket account, it is easy to save and post pictures here on Vanning.com as well as other forums you may belong to.

Here is a good HOW TO LINK

North man... please check you PM

Good catch, Rusty... on the "Boat Hatch." I never thought of that, but it really makes sense.
