Yep dash has to come out but not that hard to do and a great time to clean up 20 years of dust and debris that is back there.

I recently had my '92s dash out for a heater core job.

I don't think I'd pull the dash just to replace the speakers.
But...
If you decide to do it, I wrote down all the steps, so I could give you a sort of write up on what needs to be done.

Appreciate that Rusty , but yeah i don't think i'll pull the dash just to replace speakers . i've got the hightop & plenty of room over my head or in the doors to put better speakers in .

Yeah, no problem.

I'm going to be doing some stereo work myself in the coming months, and I guarantee you that I'll be leaving those stock speakers right where they are. lol

I just reached right up and changed them I have a 84, so 10 years may make a big difference? They are some oddball size so I installed 4x6 plates.

On ours, there's no way to get to the mounting screws (from the top), or remove the speaker (from underneath) with the dash in place.

Looks like this:

Here's our '94 with the dash pad, etc removed.

I was replacing the windshield and changed the speakers while I was there. For the life of me I can't remember the brand but they weren't fancy as I was just interested in replaced the factory stuff. The cluster and duct work has to come out on the drivers side, duct work on the pass side.
They were drop-ins (like a 3"x5" or so) and not very expensive.
We don't even have a stereo for the road as we talk about everything we see while riding and the noise gets in the way. (giving away our age here) I have a storage tray built were the radio goes in the dash.
In the back we do have 360 sound with sub woofer for watching movies in bed. cool
It's a 110 volt system for camping.
