Royle Purple oil? | Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 38 newbie | OP newbie Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 38 | Hello, I've got an interesting question. I've looked all over the internet and out side of a lot of back and forth arguments, have not really found the answer I'm looking for. Witch is would it be OK to put royle purple 0w 20 or 5w 30 in my 1989 5.7l Chevy 350 with 107000 on it. When I got my van 3 mouths ago I didn't do a oil change because the the service sticker said it didn't need it for 4000 more miles, I just crossed the 6000 miles mark. Im not really worried, I'm just looking for input or even a suggestions. I've heard good things about Royal Purple, so I'd thought Id see what you guys thought about putting synthetic oil in. Thanks. My baby. Polaris!!!! The end doesn't scare us!!! When will this cease!?!!? The warheads will all rust in peace!!!

Generally somebody says "My Uncle Louie has been using brand XX for 500,000 miles and nuttin' broke. They are too stupid to realize that such statements are not worth the air to say. Somebody has an Uncle Timmy that used WallyWorld .89/qt Dino for 500,000 miles and "nuttin' broke". These people who use this over-hyped boutique oils, RoyalPurple and then CHANGE it at 3000 miles think they are accomplishing something. Meanwhile, Mini-cooper uses syn and recommends oil/filter change every 15K. It's like that with many of the European mfg. In the US, they know the dummies will pay more so they have shorter change intervals on the SAME car." www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums. There are lots of oil analysis on that site to compare how oils actually perform. I would NOT use Royal Purple. Changing synthetic every 3,000 miles does nothing, and some reports state it's worse for the engine to change the oil too soon. Royal Purple is a good oil that cost $3 more a qt over mobil 1. Some drag racers use RP but the block is over 500 ci. Most all Nascar's use Mobil 1, well thats good enough for me !

I never use snake oil products. There are loads and loads of highly advertised crap in the automotive aftermarket. As long as the oil you use has the API sunburst logo, it is fine. Synthetic is worth the extra money if you can afford it, but it isn't necessary. 5W-30 is a good all around weight for most applications.
And don't fall for the lame "your old engine needs ZDDP additive" line, either. Modern oils are backwards compatible with flat tappet engines.

I run regular dyno oil in my van and bike, change it at 5K miles on a regular basis, and and have no problems at all. I send a sample in about every third change to get a better idea of whats up inside there. . . I use Blackstone Labs to do the testing, $25.00 a shot. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/

The engine currently in my 89 Ford was rebuilt around 2003 when it was in my old 84 Ford. Since the rebuild, I have run synthetic oil almost exclusively in the engine. No leaks, no problems. Since the motor was new, there were no "hidden" leaks to become exposed. Over ten years of hard use later and the engine still has 50+ oil PSI when cold, 25 PSI idling hot, and back up to 50 PSI off idle when hot. I chage the oil whenever I remember to and whenever I have the time. I haven't done it for probably over a year now. I might try running 0W-20 since the clearances are still pretty tight in this motor.

Made it home thats when I discovered the crack. The offroad place said the syn is the only thing that saved the gear pak.
I run Mobil 1 10-30 .. I add 10-40 when needed till change time. But I run a HOT motor offroadin.

I run Mobil 1 synthetic engine oil when I can afford it. That is the only synthetic I run. Royal Purple and the like are really just snake oil. Race teams run it for the endorsement money.

If I rebuild some day, Synth is a possibility. . . .
