In that case I'd feel confident that the 7399887 ECM is what you have. Is the stalling becoming more frequent?

got an idea to try from a friend yesterday, so i held off on buying the ecm that i found. he said it sounds like the O2 sensor isn't adjusting for the loss of back pressure. he told me to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes and to turn the ignition on (to discharge the capacitors in the ECM) while the battery was unhooked. then to turn key off, re hook up battery and see if that changed anything. i did what he suggested and it seems to be better. i drove it some yesterday and while the idle was still a little low, it was not as low as before and was smooth. i just need to get some miles on it and see what happens.

okay, seems like it's running waaay rich now. wants to stumble when i'm pulling up to a stop sign/light. when in gear at idle, i can see black soot like stuff coming from the exhaust. it hasn't died anymore, thus far, though. knock on wood....

Doesn't this model have the throttle position sensor? If so, I'd see if there is a test for throttle position sensor operation. Check for error codes again too.

Did you perform the test Uncle Fester suggested for vacuum leaks around the throttle body? Here's the deal; if excess air is sucked in through a leak, **including one in your brand new exhaust system** the O2 sensor's signal will cause the ECM to command more fuel to be injected.

And there is a widespread misunderstanding about exhaust systems; there are pulses of vacuum as well as pressure. Depending upon how far up inside the manifolds the O2 sensors are, outside air could very well be reaching them from a leak at a donut gasket.

Did you actually plug off the Air pump system hoses when you disconnected it's belt?

I'd make really sure the timing is good too; make certain your harmonic damper hasn't spun the outer ring with the timing grooves milled in it.

While you were in the distributor last, did you perform the test for side to side play on the distributor shaft? 0.006" is excessive.

okay, cool. i'll check that stuff. so you're saying if i had an exhaust leak, say, where the smog pump tube bolts into the back of the exhaust manifold, that could potentially be causing me trouble? because i think i do have a small leak at that point on the right manifold.

not sure on the tps, i'll try to do some more research and see what i can come up with.

worst case scenario, it'll get a distributor, intake manifold and carb. lol!!!

i'd really like to get it running well as is, though, before i go to extremes...
thanks!

Any leak in the exhaust which is close to the O2 sensors could cause them to read lean, which would cause the ECM to inject more fuel.

The 02 sensor on an '89 318 is on the driver's side exhaust manifold. On the passenger side manifold there is a diverter valve on a bi metal spring which sends a portion of exhaust gasses through the intake manifold to warm it and the base of the throttle body.

This diverter valve can have failed and is sending a significant portion of exhaust through the intake manifold, reaching the 02 sensor, throwing off the readings.

I've wired my diverter valve wide open, as I live in a mild climate, and the whole device had failed, with the valve rattling back and forth rapidly and leaking. Repairing it requires a new exhaust manifold, and likely many broken bolts in the head to replace it, and an ensuing tool throwing curse fest which I will avoid.

I forget which direction fully opens this valve, but watching it when revving the engine will tell you. If you are not in a cold climate I would not worry about proper function of this valve.

If you replace the 02 sensor, buy NTK or Denso, not Bosch as Bosch in Dodges are known to work improperly.

On my Ford, years ago, I took the smog pump tube off the back side of the heads, I cut it down about a inch from the mounting flange, hammered it shut TIGHT and took it to a exhaust shop, had the fill inside the tube with weld ( no welder myself ) this made a nice solid "plug" for the holes in the heads, and kept my van running right. . .

FYI- on the Fords you can unbolt the injection tube from the head, turn it around, and bolt it back on. This turns the tube inlet into a plug for the heads. Just sayin'.

Years ago I plugged the air injection tube on a 360 in a van using latex examination gloves, RTV sealant, a hose clamp, and some heater hose. It didn't work very well, but it worked. I wouldn't recommend it! laugh

Windows- they're what make a van worth owning!
