I had a G20 that sucked exhaust into the back doors, even with the windows closed, the gasket on the doors was shot.

How full is the gas tank when the smell occurs, or does it give off the smell no matter how full the tank is. If I fill the tank on my 76 the whole way, I will get gas fumes and even some leakage out the charcoal canister.

I again vote for canisters... from what I understand if you pull the the trigger once again after the pump has already clicked the fuel has no where to go but into the canisters (where it shouldn't be by the way because I thought those were just for fumes).

On ours it wasn't that we were overfilling but that one of the hoses leading to the canister was cracked in such a way that I didn't see it until I moved it the right way. Fixed that and the smell disappeared.

UPDATE!!

- aftermarket manifold was installed by previous owner with original gasket left in, it didn't seal properly thus letting out fumes around the edges...possibly warped the manifold on right hand side
- seals on all doors and engine cowling are shot

- have since found out the washer unit was removed at some point for the window wipers, automatic MOT fail here in UK...not sure why it passed first test

- some douche bag removed the brake send unit making the brakes more or less useless!?!? I'm upgrading the front to performance discs but who the hell does that in the first place?

Anyway I'll keep ya'll posted on the progress!

Aluminum is soft. Get a good gasket and try retorquing the intake in the correct installation order.

I don't have much faith in the work done by the prior owners of that van. I would do a very careful and thorough inspection of the entire vehicle before I drove it with any regularity.

I have to laugh about the difference in vehicle registration requirements between England and Washington State. Here in Washington State all I have to do is pay for my vehicle registration every year (about $30 US dollars) and I have no inspection. Not even an emissions test. Even when my van was new enough to require the emissions test there was no safety inspection. I could be driving around in a rusted out deathtrap and I could still get tags if it was more than 25 years old.

I lived in Wyoming during the 90s. No inspections! Even for some of my rusty junk! I guess they figured that if I had the balls to drive it, it was good enough.

Thanks to all who have taken time to reply to my n00b questions! Y'all are a gold mine of information.

My sister once owned a 1980 Oldsmobile that burned oil like there was no tomorrow but passed the emissions test because the HC, NOx, and CO output were below the limit. Go figure.

@Bourne: Sorry, I know this thread is a couple months old but I've got a fumes problem with my new van where it's getting into the cabin (and by new, I mean 29 years old). I posted my question elsewhere but this thread came up in a topic search. In my case it's exhaust fumes getting in but I wanted to see what happened with your Dodge and if new seals on the doors and engine cowling helped.

By the way, this is one of my favorite vans on the site. Really clean. I'm partial to gloss black as well.....I'm sure it stands out in London. -- Joe
