Plug and play computer stuff won't help with fuel line issues, fuel pump issues, exhaust issues, radiator issues, mounting issues, dash wiring issues, the list goes on.

I bet most of you don't know that Don Noones Ford, Pirates of the Caravan is an LS1 with Chevy trans.
Gets around 15 mpg.

I know the van well and didn't know he did that swap. That's what I'm talking about!!!! Reed I have personally installed a TPI V8 in a 1986 Astro van overcoming all the problems you mentioned and more. Those that say it can't be done should get out of the way of those who are doing it. LMAO

OK- but the 86 Astro (a) is a GM product and (b) likely already had some form of fuel injection. I am not saying it CAN'T be done. Anything is possible with enough money and time. I am saying that it is not a project I would attempt due to the cost an complexity. Why waste your time and resources? Just go buy a van with the engine you already want, or spend your money upgrading the van you already have.

If you have the money and the time, go knock yourself out. Personally, I think it would be a shame to hack up a nice old Ford van to install a Chevy drivetrain. If I were you and had the resources to contemplate installing a Chevy drivetrain into a 78 Ford van, I would go with a 93-96 351W/AODE combination running a Ford MAF based sequential EFI system. All factory parts, even the fuel tank and fuel supply system, are a direct bolt in. The hardest part would be finding a spot to mount the EFI/trans computer. If you have the money, install a Ford Lighting supercharged 351W engine for some real fun, again, all factory parts.

Not "shitting on" your idea, just offering you some advice as someone who has done a lot of wrenching, drivetrain swaps, and EFI retrofitting on the 75-91 Ford chassis. Sorry if I was trying to offer you advice and save you money and trouble. Free free to ignore me!

I did a ls swap in a 70 chevy. Was very easy and I converted it to carb. Edelbrock has a intake kit and msd box to fire the coils. Top that off with a street demon carb and its a perfect combo. The street demon is built very similar to a quadrajet but works much better. Good fuel economy and nice grunt when you open the one huge barrel in the rear.
