I've got my interior all pulled out, all rust treated, things fixed, etc. - soon everything will be going back in with fresh insulation and sound dampening.

I'm wondering if, while I have access to the interior window seals if it would be wise or incredibly stupid to seal them up with large amounts of silicone caulking? I need to do a leak test but part of me would feel better knowing that I at least sealed them up as best as possible. The other part of me worries that any future glass swapping (heaven forbid) will be a nightmare if I cake on silicone caulking.

Any advice?

Its putty that you can shape to what ever. It doesnt harden.

Thanks, frscke1 - I've been using Butyl for years on miniature sets for lighting and dressing but it never occurred to me that this was its intended purpose. Appreciate the lead!

Are you painting everything with a rust stopper paint since you treated all the rust spots? And what are you going to use for insulation?

Take Care,
Kevin

Yes indeed, we used and anti-rust primer and anti-rust enamel top coat over every square inch of the inside. My lady is a trooper.

After lots of reading and cross referencing of posts about insulation we're planning a big combo of sound dampener coatings, Reflectix, roof flashing tape, various insulation sheets/rolls, MLV rolls, and so on. Also, marine grade plywood.

Speaking of which I'm curious how most people have fastened their ply to the floor but feel like I've asked way too many questions around here already.

Dont use roof flashing anything. Stay away from any asphalt based products. I would suggest this stuff, for sound deadener https://amzn.com/B00URUIKAK . And this stuff for temp control https://amzn.com/B00URV8MFC

And Reflectix is awesome for windows, but I would suggest tinting the windows too.

Im going to be using this stuff for insulation, because of its sound deadening quality and fire proof up to 2000 degrees. http://www.lowes.com/pd/Roxul-59-7-...und-Barrier-15-25-in-W-x-47-in-L/3394032 or this one http://www.lowes.com/pd/Roxul-Wood-...-Sound-Barrier-23-in-W-x-47-in-L/4382953

This is what I used to put down my marine grade plywood. I would look for stainless steel ones if you can find them. Also make sure you dont screw them through gas lines or electrical or into your gas tank. [Linked Image]

Here is an album of my remodel I did last year on my old van. http://s1281.photobucket.com/user/kevin_wenger1/Van%20Remodeling%20June-July%202015/story

Thanks for the links and for sharing the gallery, super awesome work! I'm dreading doing the electrical part - will definitely be in over my head.

By roof flashing I meant aluminum tape, but maybe I misspoke (or perhaps those are asphalt based?). I'll make sure to avoid it, either way.

For mounting your ply did you go from underneath (undercarriage) up into the wood or top down into the sheet metal? Figured I'd use self-tapping screws but stainless is definitely the way to go, either way.

Appreciate all the tips!

For mounting the plywood I went top down into the floor sheet metal. I just made sure I knew what was below I was drilling into first. As you can see in my gallery of picture I put down the denim insulation before the wood to give it more sound proofing plus it has a vapor barrier.

I will be doing this whole thing soon with my new van, it is a bone stock tradesman. The only power option on it is Power Mirrors, lol

The Interior is flawless and has no rust anywhere. So now I have another blank canvas to work on. And learned a lot from my other van. I want this new one to be even more bad ass.

Take Care,
Kevin
